Overview
Success in e-commerce brings its own challenges. As online retailers grow, so does the complexity behind the scenes. Thousands of transactions, multiple sales channels, payment platforms, overseas VAT and ever-increasing volumes of financial data can quickly overwhelm business owners who would rather focus on growing their brand.
It’s a challenge that many accountants recognise only when they take a closer look at a client’s books. Increasingly, that’s when they call Elly Flower, founder of Fox Clever Bookkeeping, who is fast becoming an influential Devon business leader.
An award-winning e-commerce specialist, Elly has built her business around helping online retailers understand far more than their bookkeeping. Her focus is on helping founders understand the profitability behind their business, giving them the confidence to make informed decisions about growth, investment and future planning.
“I’m a great believer in understanding your profits. I want business owners to know what their business needs in order to attract investment and achieve growth.”
It’s a philosophy shaped not by a traditional accounting career, but by first-hand entrepreneurial experience. Before founding Fox Clever Bookkeeping in 2018, Elly helped establish Cornwall’s first games development studio. As Operations and Finance Director, she was part of the team that grew the business to 25 employees, secured publishing contracts in the USA and achieved multi-million-pound turnover within just a few years.
Like many founders, she experienced the pressure of managing cashflow, making investment decisions and trying to understand what the financial reports were really saying. “I knew because I’d been one of them.”
That experience changed the direction of her career. Rather than starting another technology business, Elly recognised a gap in the market. Founders didn’t just need accurate bookkeeping – they needed someone who could explain their numbers in plain English and help them make better commercial decisions.
One observation stayed with her. “Nobody teaches business owners what profit actually means. There’s gross profit, net profit, profit before tax, profit after tax and profit margins. Nobody really holds your hand through any of that when you’re growing a business.”
Today, Fox Clever Bookkeeping specialises exclusively in e-commerce businesses selling through Shopify, Amazon, Etsy and eBay. Using cloud accounting platforms, specialist software and AI-powered automation, the firm processes high volumes of financial data quickly and accurately, allowing clients to spend less time on administration and more time building their business.
Rather than replacing accountants, Elly works alongside them. In fact, many of her clients are referred by accountancy firms whose online retail clients have outgrown traditional bookkeeping systems and require specialist support.
The business now operates from offices in Falmouth and Torquay, supporting companies across the South West and throughout the UK. While her clients range from ambitious start-ups to established online retailers, they all share one thing in common – they want reliable financial information that helps them make confident business decisions.
Alongside her commercial work, Elly is passionate about supporting ethical businesses. Many of Fox Clever Bookkeeping’s clients are B Corps or purpose-led organisations, while the company also supports UK habitat restoration projects through Ecologi. Sustainability is embedded within the business, with carbon accounting expertise available as part of the wider team.
For growing online retailers, specialist bookkeeping isn’t simply about keeping accurate records. It’s about understanding the numbers that drive better decisions. That’s where Elly has built her reputation. Following her move to Torquay, she looks forward to working with more local Devon businesses, accountants and professional advisers, bringing specialist e-commerce knowledge to one of the UK’s most dynamic regions for independent businesses.
